About Sugar Skulls

Thaneeya's sugar skull designs are inspired by the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that is celebrated every year on the 1st and 2nd of November. Called Dia de los Muertos in Spanish, the concept of Day of the Dead has spread across the world as people from different backgrounds and cultures feel an affinity with this special holiday that honors those who have passed away.

Sugar skulls are the most popular icon of Day of the Dead. As their name suggests, they are made from sugar and then decorated with colored icing, foil, beads, and other decorative items. To those unfamiliar with the holiday, making skulls may seem morbid, but the Day of the Dead is actually a joyous tribute to the dead. As such, sugar skulls are often smiling and are always bursting with color.

They're typically given as gifts to the living or placed as offerings on the altars of the departed. They're not meant to be eaten, but Mexicans make all kinds of treats, like pan de muerto, during the Day of the Dead.

To learn how to make your own colorful sugar skulls, like those in the image on the left, you can check out our How to Make Sugar Skulls page and then find out how you can decorate them.
